During SportAccord’s General Assembly in St. Petersburg, Russia on Friday, Austrian Marius Vizer was elected to take over from Hein Verbruggen as President of SportAccord, the umbrella organisation for all Olympic and non-Olympic international sports organisations.

Vizer, president of the International Judo Federation defeated Bernard Lapasset, chairman of the International Rugby Board with 52 to 37 votes by secret ballot Friday morning and won the election.

45 votes were required to win. One of the ideas that Vizer has aired during his campaign is a ‘United World Championship’ for Olympic and non-Olympic sports to take place every four year.

According to reports, the first could take place in 2017 and interested hosts and sponsors have already approached him.

According to Vizer, the IOC should not feel threatened by this new championship.

“They don’t have to worry because it’s a different event with a different background, a different strategy," he said according to Around the Rings.

The new SportAccord President plans to take on a double-role and stay in his post as President at the International Judo Federation while heading SportAccord.

"I don’t think it’s any problem or difficulty to manage both organizations,” he said reports Around the Rings.
