With a monthly budget under 90,000 US dollars and no more than three thousand supporters at their games, Arsenal de Sarandí is the smallest club in Argentina’s competitive Primera División. Nevertheless, for the first time in its brief 50-year history, Arsenal de Sarandí have reached the top of Argentine football, leading the division after four rounds.

On 9 February 2007, the suspended IOC member Park Yong-sung was given an amnesty for his fraud conviction by South Korean president Roh Moo-hyun. A few days later, Park was welcoming the IOC bidding committee that came to assess Pyeongchang as host for the Winter Games in 2014, even though the judo president is still suspended from the IOC.

A verdict from a court in Lichtenstein obtained by the Play the Game documents that it was a representative for FIFA who repaid bribes money in the amount of 2.5 million Swiss Francs to the insolvent estate of sports marketing company ISL. But despite the documentation FIFA president Sepp Blatter still denies any knowledge of the payment in an interview with a Swiss newspaper.

Efforts to reform the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to make it less corrupt and more democratic have had a rocky start. First AIBA suspended a critical vice president on suspicions that he had committed acts of terrorism but in all likelihood it is a case of mistaken identity. Later AIBA suspended its secretary general for embezzlement - without making it public.

Imagine a country where football clubs have not legally registered their players, where the national football federation has ordered thousands of jerseys and shorts with false PUMA trade marks and the top official in the federation has obtained his job with a false university degree. Football has become the first target in an anti-corruption drive in Poland. A few weeks ago the Polish sports minister suspended the entire board of the Polish Football Association (PZPN) after one member was arrested on suspicion of corruption and match fixing. The price for this action may be high but the goverment is willing to pay.

In this speech to the conference 'Play Fair with Sport' held at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on 29 September 2006, director of Play the Game Jens Sejer Andersen suggests that the international communiy founds a “Global Coalition for Good Governance in Sport" to fight the growing problem of corruption in sport. The new body should be organised along the lines of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
