Journalism grants available for Play the Game 2019

Thanks to generous support from the Norwegian Union of Journalists and the Danish Union of Journalists, Play the Game will once again be able to offer a limited number of grants for media professionals to attend the conference.

Grants are available for journalists from less privileged countries and subsidies will primarily go to people from low income countries, but applicants from middle income countries may also be considered.

Play the Game 2019 runs from 13-16 October in Colorado Springs, CO. This year's edition is the 11th Play the Game conference and the first time the conference will take place outside Europe thanks to a close cooperation with the University Center of Colorado Springs.

Play the Game 2019 operates under the subtitle Athlete power on the rise.

The conference offers four days of fact-based debates about the most vital issues on world sport and the conference themes include:

• Sports governance: Tracking the voice of the athletes
• Anti-doping: Can the confidence crisis be overcome?
• Corruption and crime in sport: Too big to tackle?
• Children at risk: Protecting athletes against abuse
• Breaking monopolies: Can anybody own a sport?
• Rethinking sport and physical activity: Time to play again?
• Breaking news or faking news: The industry of integrity

Representatives of the organising comittee of Play the Game 2019 will consider grant applications in due time before the event, taking into consideration one or more of the following criteria:

• That the applicant plays an active role in the sports debate in his or her home country and can prove a long-term interest in the conference themes
• That the applicant can add value to Play the Game’s agenda by reporting on conference issues to national media, by presenting papers during the conference, by entering in panel discussions, by contributing to Play the Game’s own news production or in other ways
• That he or she is able to cover the total travel costs
• That the total selection of grant holders represents a mix of earlier participants and newcomers
• That a fair distribution of grants is achieved with respect to gender, age, geographical origin, function in the public sports debate etc.

Applications must be sent by 1 July 2019, 15:00 CET at the latest.
