    What critics found unlikely has now turned into fact: Ruben Acosta has decided to leave the presidency of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) at the end of the Beijing Olympics. He says he wants to make room for a new era, but his successor Wei Jizhong will mainly focus on “implementing and accomplishing all the projects already initiated by Dr. Acosta.”

    In a surprising press release, the president of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), Ruben Acosta, has declared that he plans to retire from his post at the FIVB Congress in Dubai in June. However, long-time critics of Acosta’s regime fear that the announcement is part of a power game and that Acosta has no real plans to give up his position in FIVB.

    The tiny state of San Marino has become the scene of some very strange manoeuvres in sports governance. The local Volleyball Federation is currently suspended by the FIVB because the national Olympic Committee (CONS) dismissed local board members and replaced them with others. New elections were held in August to rectify the problem but became a charade as CONS enrolled hundreds of false members for the ballot.

    The volleyball federation in the tiny state of San Marino has been suspended by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV). The suspension is a reaction to interference from the National Olympic Committee in San Marino, which has dismissed the president and board members elected by the San Marino federation in 2005 and replaced them with others.

    The symbolism was highly visible as about 25 volleyball representatives from different countries met this weekend under a heavy November sky at the Copenhagen Island Hotel – a brand new hotel which is built on an artificial island in the port basin. Here, a brand new world federation was founded by people who over the years have felt put out on an island and isolated by the International Volleyball Federation FIVB.
