The European Week of Sport is an initiative of the EU Commission, which takes place between the 10-18 September and aims to promote sport and physical activity across Europe.
In a recently adopted report, European Council members call for more sport for all through a shift in member countries’ sports political focus towards more public health and less discrimination.
Figures from Sport England show that the number of people engaging in physical activity has fallen by 0.4% since the London Olympics in 2012. “Disappointing,” says former sports minister Richard Caborn.
Hosting the 2020 Olympics should not only raise Japan’s international profile, it should also make its people healthier. Despite rating well internationally when it comes to sports participation, Japan wants to do even better.
The London Olympics in 2012 were supposed to inspire a whole generation to take up sport. It did not happen and the UK government is now giving its entire sports strategy an overhaul in a nationwide consultation process.
