The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) wants to clean up its reputation as a corrupt and controversial organisation. As one of his first acts in office, the newly elected president Ching-Kuo Wu has set up a reform committee and appointed IOC executive board member Gerhard Heiberg as its chairman.

The symbolism was highly visible as about 25 volleyball representatives from different countries met this weekend under a heavy November sky at the Copenhagen Island Hotel – a brand new hotel which is built on an artificial island in the port basin. Here, a brand new world federation was founded by people who over the years have felt put out on an island and isolated by the International Volleyball Federation FIVB.

With boundless energy and speaking non-stop in three different languages Jean-Pierre Seppey, president of the new volleyball federation FIABVB, held the attention throughout the founding congress even though the room was full of people with whom he had fought bitterly during his time as secretary general of the FIVB.

Ministers of sport from 49 European countries want to set up a new body under the auspices of the Council of Europe to strengthen European policymaking in the area of sport. As something new, the new body will also be open to international sports federations and sports NGOs.

The International Associations of Athletics Federation (IAAF) uses powerful weapons in an attempt to stop political interference. IAAF has barred Algerian track and field athletes from all international competitions after Algeria’s athletic federation was dissolved by the country’s Minister of sport, Yahia Guidoum, in September.

The ongoing drama in Kenyan football took yet another twist this Monday when Kenya’s Football Federation (KFF) and Kenya Premier League (KPL) announced an agreement of collaboration aiming to reinstate order in Kenyan football and relieve the country of its suspension from FIFA.

The International Federation of Beach Volley and Volleyball Associations (FIABVB) has announced the dates for the 1st FIABVB friendship and solidarity congress where the founding of a new volleyball world federation to rival the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) will take place. It will take place in Denmark on 25-26 November 2006.

Critics of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) are moving forwards with plans for a new international volleyball federation. In late November a founding congress will take place in Copenhagen for the new federation whose main purpose is to clean up the FIVB and rid it of its current leadership.
