When Play the Game decided to move its 2019 conference overseas, one out of quite a few concerns were the risk of losing the domestic support. That concern is now obsolete.
Once again, Danish organisations in sport and media – and one from Norway – have proved loyal and generous to supporting Play the Game’s flagship event and its aspirations to gain more international backing for democracy, transparency and freedom of expression in sport.
The National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark (DIF) has extraordinarily increased its support by 50 per cent considering the extra costs related to a conference in the U.S. The NOC donates 150,000 Danish kroner (22,700 USD).
Likewise, the national elite sports institution Team Denmark delivers a 50 per cent increase by donating 11,350 USD.
Anti-Doping Denmark comes very close by adding 7,575 USD - as well as financing travel costs for its member of Play the Game 2019’s Programme Committee - similar to the Danish FA, which has also donated 7,575 USD.
Once again, the journalists’ unions of Norway and Denmark are giving earmarked support to secure participation of journalists from low-income countries. The Norwegian union Norsk Journalistlag grants 5,300 USD whereas the Danish Union Dansk Journalistforbund hands out 3,800 USD.
Solid base in local funding
The Danish support comes on top of generous funding from Colorado Springs that secured the city’s hosting of the 2019 conference in the first place. The leader of the fundraising has been the Sport Management Program under the College of Business at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS).
Various local sponsors have contributed a total of 130,000 US dollars.
- Daniels Ethics Fund Initiative at UCCS: 40,000 USD
- LART (city council) 25,000 USD
- UCCS: 10,000 USD
- UCCS, Sport Management students: 10,000 USD
