Switzerland is the centre of international sports organisations, and now a new report from Swiss based research consultancy Rütter+Partner claims that the organisations produce substantial economic effects for the Swiss economy.

In total, 67 international sports organisations are based in Switzerland and employ around 1800 people. The dominating employers are UEFA, the IOC and FIFA, which collectively account for 65% of employment. In 2011, all 67 organisations generated a turnover of 3.8 billion Euro (CHF 4.7 billion).

Based on these numbers, the report titled ‘The economic importance of international sports organisations in Switzerland’ concludes that the Swiss-based sports organisations have (directly and indirectly) generates more than 8.000 jobs and a gross value added of about 1.2 billion Euro (CHF 1.46 billion) for the Swiss economy.

Indirect effects include supply chain and income effects, investments and impact on tourism. The report therefore argues that “many sectors of the Swiss economy benefit from purchase of goods and services, consumer spending, investments, and tourist spending by their guests”.

“Since most of their income comes from abroad, the international sports organisations can be considered as part of the export-focused share of the Swiss economy, contributing positively to the nation’s trade balance.”
