After being found guilty of staging a coup to bring down the democratically elected government, Lang Tombong Tamba has been sentenced to death and will be replaced as NOC president.

Tamba, President of the Gambian Olympic Committee and vice-president of the Gambian Football Federation was convicted along with six others for treason, conspiracy to murder and participating in staging a state coup.

“After going through the evidence of the prosecution and the defence, I find all the persons guilty and accordingly sentence them to death on all three counts," Judge Emmanuel Amadi said, when handing down the sentence, Inside the Games reports.

Tamba has appealed the conviction and denies the allegations.

The Gambian Olympic Committee has announced an extraordinary congress later this year where a new president will be elected.
