THE biggest threat facing sport today? With the Tour de France looming, some might argue that it is doping. Others would look to the truly frightening increase in debt in football, with the latest figure for the Premier League amounting to an eye-watering £3.1 billion.

Increasingly, though, the suspicion grows that the greatest danger to sport is the proliferation of gambling and the associated rise of match-fixing.

On the eve of Wimbledon, it has been claimed that the tennis authorities will be carefully scrutinising between six and 12 players in the mens' singles.
