02.09.2009

A report issued by the Australian government is recommending an end to alcohol advertisements in relation to sports events by the end of 2020.

The National Preventative Health Strategy report found that alcohol associated sponorship of sports and athletes promoted harmful alcohol consumption levels and reinforced pro-drinking messages. Existing regulations also failed in preventing the targeting of alcohol advertising at youths.

"Meaningful" penalties in sporting codes for sportspeople responsible for alcohol-related misbehaviour was also advised by the report., after many high-profile high-profile alcohol-fuelled scandals.

In related news, there are allegations that the NSW government has tried to circumvent Australian federal laws on tobacco sponsorship of sports events.
