Minister: Rio security budget needs to triple for Olympics

28.10.2009

After the recent riots in Rio de Janeiro causing several killings, Brazilian minister of justice Tarso Genro sat down yesterday with the city’s governor Sergio Cabral to discuss the level of crime in the Brazilian city.

"If the current level of public security investment continues as it is, we will not end up with a satisfactory situation," Genro said according to Around the Rings. "As such, we have to triple the rhythm of work and necessary investment to improve public security and in 2016, we will be prepared."

$144 million dollars will be allocated for fighting crime in the seven years before the Rio Games in 2016, Around the Rings report.
