External inquiry to look at kickback accusation against IIHF president

13.05.2009

The International Ice Hockey Federation said Wednesday an independent inquiry will examine allegations its president Rene Fasel took kickbacks from marketing deals.

The governing body said its legal committee chairman, Fred Meredith, is seeking to appoint an external investigator to look at claims made by a Swiss Sunday newspaper that a sports agency made indirect payments to Fasel. He has denied the allegations.

Fasel, who is a member of the International Olympic Committee's executive board, has also contacted the IOC's ethics panel to give his version of events.
