Commonwealth Games will make Dehli slum-free

17.08.2009

A senior Indian government minister believes that New Delhi's hosting of the 2010 Commonwealth Games will mean that the city will be slum-free in four years.

Delhi chief Minister Sheila Dikshit claims that the building work taking place in the city to improve the infrastructure and appearance of the city is a key factor in the creation of nearly 10,000 low-cost homes that will be built to house the poor who have been moved to make way for Commonwealth Games building works.

"The infrastructure which is being developed for the Games will be part of the legacy of the city," says Dikshit.

Local authorities have also confirmed that slums that are yet to be redeveloped will be hidden by large bamboo walls during the Games "to present a good face of Delhi during the Games".
