Seminar in Copenhagen: The Great Nordic Gambling War

21.08.2006

The Nordic countries find themselves at war about a billion-Euro market. Corporate international gaming and betting companies have started a tough competition with the public gaming monopolies which generate fortunes to sport and other good causes.

The Nordic model is also under attack from various other fronts: EU legislation might put an end to monopolies. Leading national media defy the advertising ban imposed on foreign betting companies. Match fixing threatens the credibility of sport and betting alike.

Nordic Journalist Centre, The Danish Institute for Sports Studies and Play the Game now invites you to an open and comprehensive conference rich on information about the legal, political and historical background for the Great Nordic Gambling War.

Tuesday 3 October at DGI-byen in Copenhagen, you will meet the most prominent group of experts ever gathered to discuss one of the most decisive sports political questions in the Nordic countries – and in many other European countries, too. For the first time, both sides of the industry engage in debates at the same event.

Some of the main speakers:

  • Former court president Jan Francke, responsible for a controversial report on the gaming market made for the Swedish government

  •  Tjeerd Veenstra, Director of De Lotto in the Netherlands and executive board member of European Lotteries, the branch organisation for the public gambling companies

  • Executive director Norbert Teufelberger of Bwin (formerly Betandwin), one of the biggest gaming companies in Europe which mixes betting, sport and entertainment

  • Head of research Martin Sychold, Swiss Institute of Comparative Law. Sychold has mapped the gambling market in the 25 EU-countries for the EU Commission

  • Lecturer Johan R. Norberg, Malmö Högskola, one of very few Nordic academics to have researched the close ties between sports organisations and game monopolies

  • Executive director Warwick Bartlett, Global Betting & Gaming Consultants, who is chairman of the Association of British Bookmakers

  • Head of Oddset operations Jens Nielsen, Danske Spil, chairman of the sports betting working group in the industry association European Lotteries which works to prevent match fixing in close cooperation with football organisations

The target group for the conference is primarily Nordic journalists, politicians, researchers, organisations, betting companies and media houses.

Most of the presentations will be held in a Nordic language: Norwegian, Swedish or Danish but English interpretation will be available to the audience.
