Developing governance principles
Although all anti-doping organisations are obliged to comply with the World Anti-Doping Program, until recently there has been no guiding or binding principles to measure the level of good governance in anti-doping bodies at the national level.
From 2019 to 2021, the NADGO project has developed a code of good governance and a tool to evaluate the performance of national anti-doping agencies.
Later, the tool has been used to benchmark 11 national anti-doping agencies, and the findings are published in a concluding report from June 2021.

The NADGO tool and final report
The NADGO project assists national anti-doping organisations (NADOs) in raising the quality of their governance and promoting independent practices free from conflicts of interest. It set out in 2019 to
- map the current structures, practices, challenges and weakness of governance in the field of anti-doping
- develop a code of good governance and a practical benchmarking tool that can be used to evaluate the performance of NADOs on good governance parameters
- create networks and setting up workshops on good governance for the wider community of NADOs

From NSGO to NADGO
The National Anti-Doping Governance Observer (NADGO) uses the framework of the concluded Erasmus+ project, the National Sports Governance Observer (NSGO), as a starting point for discussions about how to benchmark national anti-doping governance.
The NSGO project created a robust framework for improving governance in national sports organisations by
- establishing, sustaining and nurturing domestic networks of public authorities and sport stakeholders
- exchanging and disseminating good practices
- monitoring the implementation of good governance standards.
