Improving Governance: Top-Down and Bottom-Up Strategies - Play the Game 2005 (PP Pdf.) CV Christine Oughton is Professor of Management and Director of the Football Governance Research Centre at Birkbeck, University of London.

Christine completed her university education at the University of Cambridge where she took a PhD in Economics, having previously taken a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Politics at the University of East Anglia.

Before joining Birkbeck she was Lecturer in Economics at the University of Glasgow and Senior Lecturer in Industrial Economics at the University of Birmingham. 

At Birmingham, she was also Director of the Research Centre for Industrial Strategy and Co-ordinator of Research for the West Midlands Regional Innovation Strategy. 

Between 2001-04 she was Head of the Department of Management at Birkbeck.

Christine joined Birkbeck in 1999 and has directed and co-directed a number of major research projects funded by: the European Commission Fifth Framework Programme; the British Academy; Mutuo; the Department of Culture, Media and Sport; Grant Thornton; the Professional Footballers’ Association; and the Department of Trade and Industry.

She has given expert evidence to competition authorities on football related cases.

Christine was adjunct Professor at Notre Dame University, USA between 2000-2004.

She is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Regional Studies Association and a Board member of the Oxford Economic Observatory.

She was the first Director of the MSc in the Business of Football (now the MSc in Sport Management and the Business of Football) at Birkbeck, University of London.

The degree attained ESRC recognition for 1+3 Studentships in 2002.

The research of the Football Governance Research Centre (FGRC) focuses on the economics, governance and regulation of football and other sports.

Recent publications have covered the ownership and governance of football clubs, competitive balance of sports leagues, the relationship between the football and broadcasting industries and regulation by sports governing bodies and the competition authorities.

The FGRC publishes an annual review of governance issues in football – The State of the Game.

Christine is frequently invited to speak at major conferences on sport and regulatory issues and has published 3 co-edited books on football, as well as numerous book chapters, journal articles and reports.
