Sigmund Loland is professor of sport philosophy at The Norwegian University for Sport and Physical Education where he teaches sport philosophy, theory of science, and alpine skiing. He has published extensively in national and international journals on topics such as sport ethics, the epistemology of movement, the history of ideas of sport, and sport and ecology.

He is the author and editor of several books, among them "Idrett, kultur, samfunn" (Sport, Culture and Society) (3. ed. 1998), and "Toppidrettens pris" (High Performance Sport - Costs and Values) (1998), both published by The Norwegian University Press. His latest book is Fair Play in Sport (London: Routledge 2002), a critical and systematic analysis of normative ideals of current competitive sport and how they can be realized in practice.
